As the EU does not have an Economic Partnership Agreement with Japan, customs duties will apply to the value of the vehicle as well as French VAT. This means that 20% of VAT + 10% of customs fees will have to be added to the price of your vehicle for an import from Japan. The average cost of a maritime repatriation is generally between 1500 and 2000€ (including freight and maritime insurance). Port fees (from 1000 to 1500€) will also have to be taken into consideration.
Constitution of the administrative files for the registration of a Japanese vehicle
- If the vehicle is not supplied with a COC (European Certificate of Conformity), it may be required to be brought up to standard or to be homologated. JAPANESE VEHICLE REGISTRATION DOCUMENT IN POSSESSION
When you arrive in France with your car from Japan, you have fifteen days to start the registration process. While waiting to obtain your final registration card, you must apply for a provisional registration certificate (CPI) to drive legally on French roads.
