Register a car in Germany!

In Germany, as in Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and many other countries, the seller must declare the sale of his vehicle for export to the vehicle registration office so that the vehicle can be deregistered.

Motorimport used cars in Germany!

The German vehicle registration service (Kfz-Zulassungsstelle) registers the deregistration (Abmeldung), and the number plates are generally returned by the seller in order to register a car in Germany. Please note that the fact that the plates are still there does not mean that the vehicle has not been deregistered. Check that the official round "Stempelplaketten" sticker is still affixed to the number plates. If it is missing, the vehicle has been deregistered and you are not allowed to drive it until it has been re-registered.

Temporary registration is also known in France as "yellow plates". They allow you to drive for just five days and are only permitted on German soil. In theory, you cannot use them in France. You will need to obtain a provisional WW registration to be authorised to drive in France before obtaining the definitive French vehicle registration document. If you break the law, you risk being immobilised until the imported vehicle is registered. In practice, this is not the most appropriate solution for importing your vehicle in order to register a car in Germany.

Export registration plates, also known as red plates (Ausfuhrkennzeichen). Their validity varies from 9 days to a maximum of 1 year and authorises you to drive in Europe. The "red plates" will cost you around 300 euros, including third-party insurance (compulsory). Along with the plates, you'll get an export registration certificate, which comes in two parts, just like the German registration certificate. To obtain it, you need to take your vehicle to the vehicle registration office. You'll need to show proof of identity, the German registration certificate (Teil 1 and Teil 2), a valid roadworthiness test (TÜV) and proof of permanent deregistration.

Registering a car in Germany

Although provisional WW registration is officially recognised in Germany, in theory it does not allow you to import a vehicle. The registration of a German vehicle that is still in the country is exclusively the responsibility of the local authorities for registering a car in Germany. In other words, a vehicle with French provisional plates is authorised to drive in Germany, provided that it is not a German vehicle that has been deregistered for export. In practice, however, things are different. In fact, many motorists take the risk of applying for a provisional registration before importing their car and then driving to Germany.

However, even though it can generally be a good idea to buy a car in Germany, this is not always the case. Especially if you lack the experience to register a car in Germany. For more guarantees, we advise you to buy your vehicle from a dealership. The dealership will provide you with more guarantees than a private individual. What's more, it can be advantageous to turn to a car agent to help you with your project. By using an agent, you can benefit from the experience of a professional, his network and his advice to help you refine your search. Using a car broker to import a German vehicle is also a guarantee that you'll get your vehicle at the best price.
